Asthana recieves top honors in materials engineering

Rajiv Asthana, engineering and technology, has been appointed to the selection committee of two international prizes in materials engineering--the Henry Marion Howe Medal, and the Marcus Grossman Young Author Award-–for three years by the American Society for Materials. The Howe Medal, established in 1923, is the oldest ASM Award, and is given to the paper of highest merit published in Metallurgical and Materials Transactions. The Grossman Award, established in 1960, is given for best paper in Transactions to authors less than 40 years in age.
Asthana is also the principal author of a new book, titled “Materials Processing and Manufacturing Science,” published by Elsevier. The 628-page book is divided into eight chapters that cover both traditional and emerging materials and processes, including solidification, powder metallurgy, ceramics, coatings, surface engineering, interfaces, composites, semiconductors and nanomaterials. Asthana’s coauthors are A. Kumar, professor of Mechanical Engineering and Center for Nanomaterials and Microelectronics Research at University of South Florida; and N. Dahotre, professor of Materials Engineering at UT-Knoxville. The book focuses on the interrelationship among materials science, processing science and manufacturing technology, and is intended for use by upper-level undergraduate students and beginning graduate students in materials engineering and related fields, and scientists, engineers, and manufacturers.
